Please Be Kind, Rewind: 19 April – 16 May 2015 May 16, 2015

Oops! I’ve been slacking in my weekly updates. Gotta get better! Anyway, I’ve had a rather busy month! Hope you all have been doing well! I’m still excited to be back in the swing of blogging and I’m super excited to be working on my Read It Before You See It feature. I’ve been knocking out some books so I can binge some movies! I have a feeling if I can keep knocking books out, I’ll be able to have a super movie marathon while hubby is at annual training this summer! What are some of your favourite page to screen adaptations? I have a huge list, but I’m always looking for more suggestions! (: I’m also excited by how many trades I’ll have coming in too! In case you’ve missed the trading on Twitter, check out #booksfortrade! I’ve also been busy with #boutofbooks this week too. So much fun trying to out do my normal reading amount. Not that hard, to be honest haha. My reading amount varies greatly from week to week. I had a blast in Nashville at the Sarah J Maas signing!

Got my May package from my Secret Sister today! It’s so awesome and I’ll have a write up of April AND May up next week. (: My Sister is the best! Our poor mailman delivered five packages today. He walks our route, so he drove up to the house to drop off the boxes after he walked our block. Sorry, Mr. Mailman! I’ll have lots of books rolling in! (:

Please Be Kind, Rewind: 16 November 2014 – 4 April 2015 April 4, 2015

It feels good to be back! After a break for summer, then drama stirring every time I was ready to jump back in, I was afraid I might just hang up my blogger hat. The idea to start a blog for some of the adventures with the kiddos has sparked the desire to fully jump back in the YA blogging world too. I can’t let drama get me down from about what I’m passionate!

Instead of trying to do a FULL recap from NOVEMBER until now, I’ll just let my reading speak for itself and start back with recaps next week. I will recount as best as I can remember on books I’ve gotten. No hope on library books except for what I have on hand now though. I will still include books I get/read with the kiddos, but there will no longer be Tot Time Thursday reviews/posts. All things children’s lit, homeschooling, etc will be over on our new blog Voyages of the Backyard Explorers!

Top Ten Tuesday #41: Beach Bag Reads June 3, 2014

 

Each week, the girls over at The Broke and the Bookish think up a fun theme for the week and participating bloggers around the net join in. The theme for this week is:

Top Ten Books That Will Be in My Beach Bag/Should Be in Your Beach Bag

While I’m not entirely sure we’ll be making it to the beach this year, these are the books that I’ve selected to be in my beach bag or I think would be great beach reads to include in your beach bag! (: And of course, Punk and Bug wanted to include their two beach reads!

1. Taste the Heat by Rachel Harris. I read Seven Day Fiance last year at the beach, and it left me almost needing to run into the ocean to chill out. So, obviously, a book in the same series deserves the same treatment!

2. Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. Mary actually recommended this to me for a beach read last year, but I didn’t get to it, so it’s added back for this year! (:

3. 17 First Kisses by Rachael Allen. This is a super fast contemporary read that I knocked out in an afternoon. I think it would be a perfect beach read!

4. Oceanborn by Amalie Howard. C’mon. It has OCEAN in the name. Of course it’s gonna make the beach reads list! I absolutely loved Waterfell and recommend you read it as a beach read if you haven’t read it. If you have, I recommend Oceanborn! I NEED MOAR LO!

5. The Selection by Kiera Cass. Despite being a dystopian, I think this is a great light read for the beach. I knocked out the whole trilogy in less than a week so I think it’s a perfect beach bag add! 

6. Uninvited by Sophie Jordan. Definitely not light in the dystopian/futuristic setting, but it’s so action packed, it’s a super quick read that makes it a perfect beach bag read.

7. Seven Day Fiance by Rachel Harris. Like I mentioned above, I did read this at the beach and think it’s a good beach read. It’s set in the winter, so with the hot beach reading conditions and the swoony Cane, it’s a perfect beach bag read!

8. Die for Me by Amy Plum. Another quick read with two super swoony guys. I plan on listening to the audiobook at some point this summer, and the drive to the beach may be the perfect time!

9. Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach by James Dean. This is Punk’s must pack read for the beach! He wants to learn to surf like Pete!

10. Ladybug Girl Goes at the Beach by David Soman & Jacky Davis. Bug wants to be like Ladybug Girl and have a blast at the beach!

My thoughts:

 

I was so excited to read Uninvited. I thought Minority Report was an interesting premise and a variation further was even more intriguing. I jumped into Uninvited when I hit a lull in Cruel Beauty. I was in such a funk and I wanted to pull myself out of it. Uninvited definitely didn’t disappoint. I blew through in one evening. Luckily, my hubby was home so I didn’t have as many kiddo interruptions as usual.

 

Sophie did an incredible job creating this modern/slightly futuristic bridging world. She did such a great job that it felt like a world that you could just step into. The transition from our world to Sophie’s is seamless. The genetic testing was brilliant. The testing for the kill gene is another play on you never really know what someone could be capable of doing. I hope she goes into more detail on how the kill gene is inherited! Genetics fascinate me! Since the testing IS fiction, it doesn’t have to be perfect genetics, but even if it could be considered faulty, it doesn’t seem like a forced idea. Especially with the recent released news of potential genetic testing for Alzheimer’s disease. We’re well on our way to be able to test genetics for various things. Why not eventually a kill gene?

 

Davy was beautifully done. Though she could’ve been more whiny or go completely off the deep end in violence, she comes to terms with her fate in her own way and I believe it shows her strength in her ability to hold herself together. I’m not sure what I would do if I were in her shoes. I know with the Alzheimer’s test, I won’t be having it done. Some things are better left unknown.

 

As a parent, I am struggling with how Davy’s parents reacted. My kiddos are my babies. I carried them. I delivered them. I cuddled them. I’ve bathed them. I’ve fed them. I love them. It doesn’t compute how her parents flip out and push away from her. I don’t think I could do that. I can’t pass judgment though. I’ve never been in that situation and I pray I never will be. I like to think that I would stand by my child’s side. Again, I hope that’s a situation I’m never in.

 

Though it’s on the contemporary side more than pure science fiction, I like that it didn’t completely dwell on the romance. Sure a little spice is nice, but YA seems to be drowning a bit in must be full of romance books. A kickass heroine or any female lead DOES NOT have to have a man by her side for EVERYTHING. I think Dayv does well on her own AND with Sean by her side. Having a strong leading lady that doesn’t focus on having a boyfriend is refreshing.

 

Sophie did a really incredible job keeping me glued to every page. I definitely recommend Uninvited and I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel. It really sucks that I have to wait almost a year for it!

Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature – teaching English seemed the natural recourse. Please Be Kind, Rewind: 16-22 February 2014 February 22, 2014

I am finally getting ahead of schedule as far as getting things up on the blog. Yay! I’ve been ahead and paper for a while, but now I’m getting things typed up and scheduled. I have some giveaways planned in the next couple of weeks so keep your eyes open! Thanks to a bit of a reading slump and the Olympics, I haven’t been getting much reading done the last few weeks like I would have liked. I just can’t get into any of my ARCs so I decided to jump ship and work on knocking out some books on my TBR. I’m hoping this will lighten up the mood and rekindle that fire to devour every delicious ARC there is in my review pile! I’ve also developed an addiction to The Americans show. I’ve always meant to watch it, but never got around to it. Thanks to a well placed commercial while I had the Sochi Olympics in mind I checked Amazon Prime for it. I’ve been binge watching the first season to prep for the upcoming season. It’s AMAZING. Do you have any good spy book recommendations? It doesn’t matter what era (though the Cold War is always a good one!), just please hook me up!
